In today’s paradigm of obsessive consumption and waste, there at times appears to be little space for genuine human expression. From this tension, rises THE BLACK SOFT, the interdisciplinary duo of Joey Topmiller and Chase Coughlin, whose boundless creative tentacles permeate contemporary cultural expression across music, fashion, performance, and fine art. THE BLACK SOFT made their debut in 2011 with the launch of their first and second EP’s under their record label Terror of the Understood. Since then they have been heralded as the darlings of the fashion industry collaborating and composing music for films and runway shows including: Vogue, Nike, Mugler, Diesel, M.A.C. Cosmetics, I-D, Rad Hourani, Patti Wilson, and Nicola Formichetti. Speaking from a vision driven by creativity in response to necessity, theirs is a universe of fluctuating contradictions. THE BLACK SOFT play and destroy, push and tease the constructed psychic and physical boundaries of the flesh and mind.

During their weeks on Fire Island, The Black Soft will be working on and finishing their 4th album due out in September, as well as finalizing their debut exhibition "Below 14th Street" which will be happening from September 3rd - 7th at "The Highline Loft" in Chelsea. It will be a showing their first series of paintings all created on found objects from the streets of the east village. With the theme of the September exhibition in mind, they will replicate this process by searching the island for its most interesting abandoned objects and end the residency with a capsule collection of paintings inspired by the landscape and spirit of the island and the experience. Each weekend The Black Soft will host a party at 533 Sail that will include a live performance previewing songs off their new album "The Slow Burn," as well as a look inside the process and progress of the transformation of the found objects. At the end of the residency the pieces of art will be returned to the island and left on the beach of 533 Sail, leaving the community with artwork only made possible by the landscape of Fire Island.
