Meriem Bennani was born in 1988, in Rabat, Morocco. She lives and works in New York. Mixing the languages of reality TV, advertising, documentaries, phone footage, and high-end commercial aesthetics, Meriem Bennani explores the potential of storytelling through magical realism and humour. Her work spans video, animation, sculpture, drawing, and installation. Bennani earned a BFA from The Cooper Union in New York and a MFA from the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in Paris.
Project Description
For her residency, Meriem Benani created abstract comics with her friends as characters and Fire Island as the location. Additionally for our publication Talking to the Sun at Fire Island, she photographed herself and friends to create a calendar modeled after traditional pin-up calendars featuring women presented to the male gaze for desire. The calendar and comics both respond and create humor around the gay male-dominated culture of The Pines.
