In celebration of Fire Island Pines’ 70th anniversary, BOFFO, the Fire Island Pines Historical Society, and the Fire Island Pines Foundation present a Time Capsule Screening of the documentary “When Ocean Meets Sky,” directed by Crayton Robey and produced by Robey and Dr. Ed Schulhafer.

“When Ocean Meets Sky” offers a timeless and enduring window into the past, providing a chronicle of the social, cultural, and political transformation of Fire Island Pines. This film is a tribute to the brave trailblazers who fearlessly embraced their individuality, advocated for their convictions, fought for acceptance and equality, and paved the way for the dynamic and cherished community we embrace today.

The documentary features storytellers such as the 104-year-old Alice Thorpe, Lee Frey, Laura Delano Eastman, Larry Kramer (ACT UP), Jerry Herman (creator of “MAME,” “HELLO DOLLY,” and “LA CAGE AUX FOLLES”), Mart Crowley (author of “THE BOYS IN THE BAND”), Alan Poul (known for “TALES OF THE CITY”), Wakefield Poole (director of “BOYS IN THE SAND”), Gilbert Parker, and Tedi Thurman (Miss Monitor), co-owner of the original Boatel and Blue Whale establishments. Jim Pepper, Hal Rubenstein, Scott Bromley, Thom Hansen (Panzi), Walter Boss, Walter and Joyce Reich, Clern Lafountaine, Kenneth Stein, and Carson Kressley. Randy Jones (the original Cowboy from the Village People) narrates the film, with queer icon and Tony award-winner Sara Ramirez (“GREY’S ANATOMY” and “AND JUST LIKE THAT”) sharing their voice as Peggy Fears.

Join us during Pride Weekend on Friday, June 23, 2023, at Whyte Hall, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Admission to the screening is priced at $25, and following the film, there will be a Q&A session with the filmmakers and the remarkable trailblazers of Fire Island Pines.
