Venus as a Boy is a new work by drag performer and artist West Dakota that draws from Greco-Roman mythology, reworking the visuals, symbols, and narrative elements of the birth of Aphrodite (Venus) into a new portrait about beauty, love and desire. The performance is created with the specificity of Fire Island Pines in mind, considering both the captivating natural beauty of the island and the cultural aspirations towards beauty seen in the island's architecture and perpetuated by its residents. Through her use of drag performance, West Dakota questions these constructs, highlighting the superficial, mutable, and ephemeral qualities of beauty and desire.

West Dakota is a Brooklyn based drag queen, artist, designer and model. West graduated from Columbia University in 2016 where she studied visual arts. After graduating she relocated to Brooklyn where she launched her drag career. West’s body of work explores themes of fashion/beauty, pop culture, technology, intersectionality, language, and memes. Her work spans from queer nightlife/performance to runway/editorial modeling and much more. In April she was voted Drag Queen of the Year at the Brooklyn Nightlife Awards. She has performed across the country at venues such as MoMA PS1, Pier 59 studios and National Sawdust. West has walked at NYFW and has appeared in print and online f or publications such as Vogue, Dazed, Out and Interview.
