TIDE AND CURRENT TAXI: Faris Al-Shathir

In her Tide and Current Taxi project this year, Marie began collecting and mapping where man-made trash collects in the New York Harbor. The maps and prints that she makes from the collections tell an intimate story of our relationship to the land. With the Fire Island Float-able project she hopes to begin her collections on Fire Island, thinking of new ways to use and imagine the strange artifacts that are unearthed, a project that will further elaborated on next year.

These last two trips of the Tide and Current Taxi for 2012 were made possible by the Boffo art residency on Fire Island
Its founder and director, Faris Al-Shathir, came out with me in my boat for the very last ride.
We crawled over a broken dock in Cherry Grove to put the boat in the water.
Our mission was to paddle back to Fire Island Pines on the bay side of the island
and we picked through the little bits of debris that lined the shore.
What was there seemed nautical,
or festive,
Faris pointed out the houses of people that he knew,and ones that he was curiouse about.
We walked back home along the boardwalk.
