Every fall, thousands of monarch butterflies descend on Fire Island. Our island home is just one stop on their epic journey stretching all the way from Canada to Mexico.
But these magnificent creatures are in danger. Their numbers are dwindling so much that the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has declared them an endangered species.
Only one thing can save them: milkweed. This beautiful flowering plant is crucial to the monarch’s life cycle. Larvae feed on milkweed’s leaves; adult butterflies feed on its nectar. Without milkweed, there are no monarchs.
For summer 2025, BOFFO is collaborating with native plant landscapers Gay Gardens and BOFFO alum TM Davy to bring 200+ milkweed plants to Fire Island. A portion of the plants will be donated to the community and planted in public spaces.
Three types of milkweed will be available. Find your perfect plants at boffo.art and pick them up in the Pines Harbor on June 28th.
Join BOFFO and plant milkweed! Let’s save the monarchs together!
