Sea Spells takes a deep dive into the realm of interspecies intimacy and its correlation with queering kinship through friendship and non-binary matriarchal lineages. We take inspiration from Mayfield's project, Whale Fall, that explores the regenerative capacity of decomposing whales and the friendship of queer icons such as Marsha P. Johnson and Silvia Rivera. We channel ritual technologies for reenchantment and intimacy with the more than human. We explore queer friendship as a remedy and amulet. We conjure vessels and divine streams for collective grief, healing, joy, and release.
