Reception Afterwards: 214 Beach Hill Walk. Fire Island Pines, NY 11782
On the departure of their BOFFO Residency, artists Martine Gutierrez and DonChristian Jones will leave Fire Island with a series of questions: What is performance vs. what has performed life? What does it mean to exist on an island—to be in orbit or orbited? What resources are left as material, as currency, as sustenance? Arriving during a literal storm and tornado for their welcome party, set the tone for their two-week residency. What felt like the end of days was in contrast to the joy and pleasure of the occasion. The juxtaposition created the feeling of being on a set, transposing their bodies from the city into the idyllic landscape in the midst of potentially catastrophic climate event. Throughout their two-week stay, attempts to “surrender” were filmed becoming the basis of new work while Martine and DonChristian explored the boundaries of collective and public performance. Please join BOFFO and the Fire Island Pines community on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 2pm on the beach by Cedar Walk on set with DonChristian and Martine and a cohort of friends as they stage & film their final scene on the island. Their roles will shift from directors, to actors, to bystanders as we fluctuate in and out of reality. Afterwards, we will move to 214 Beach Hill for a reception by the pool (bring your swimsuit) and what might be another scene or just the real ending.
This weekend marks the closing of the BOFFO Residency Fire Island for the 2019 season.
