Swerve Fatigue is an iterative performance that explores choreographies of swerving – defined as making an abrupt change in direction to avoid an incoming obstacle – to work through the embodied resilience of the collective in the face of crisis. Swerve Fatigue – BOFFO continues this performative research through two discreet interventions, one conducted during the day and one at night, across the island. The first intervention takes the form of a vagrant durational solo, occupying the island’s thoroughfares — specifically, where property lines meet walking paths — to perform at these interstitial sites where inclusivity, exclusivity, and development converge. To conclude the work, a late-night intervention of group social dancing occurs in citational relationship to histories of Fire Island Tea Dances and gay ghostly lore undergirded by the conceit of seeking touch. Working in collaboration with artist and sound designer, Alexis De La Rosa, an experimental, live-composition of sound supports both interventions, melding natural field recordings captured during the residency with electronic sounds that explore the mechanical quality of the BPM. Dramaturgically wedding the ambient to the electric, the choreographic and sonic compositions linger in the zones of publicness. propertization, intimacy, the boundless and condensed experiences of a gathering, to play at the edges of speculation regarding the possible pasts and futures of this gay archipelago.
