A visual and sound performance that’s a conceptual analysis of the structures that form under the exploitative nature of capitalism. The title’s use of the Jamaican proverb “Duppy know who fi frighten”, for the purpose of this work, the interpretation being used is; ‘those who exploit know exactly who to target and who not to try’. The piece addresses our proximity to exploitative practices and whether we choose to engage in, or actively move towards creating more hospitable and inclusive environments. Through TYGAPAW’s techno soundscape and art direction, we venture into a world of a dark, alluring presence that seeks to disrupt those who value, profit and garner power and, or will do anything to acquire it from such dystopic structures. They also aim with this performance, to nurture and restoringly honor the land from which is extracted from. Duppy Know Who Fi Frighten shows a continuum of the constant interrogation of the narratives around Decolonization in TYGAPAW’s experimental practice, as displayed in their most recently staged opera. The Techno-Opera directed their audience’s senses toward the decolonization ‘of sacred spaces/environments be it the club or an island’ challenging the comfort posed in dissonance, often accompanied with practices of such “prestige”.
