During the weekend of the 19th and 20th of July, BOFFO Fire Island Art Camp Season IV Artist in Residence, Daphne Fitzpatrick will present the sculptures and photographic work she has realized during her residency. Activated by her work which captures New York City’s daily life through movement and observation, Fitzpatrick has translated this activity into the specific context of The Pines, with its particular landscape and arresting natural beauty.
Fitzpatrick will install sculptures inside the BOFFO Fire Island Art Camp House located at 533 Sail Walk and the bay beach adjacent to the property, the environment that fostered their creation. These compositions are the result of her wanderings: sandy promenades over the dunes in the manner of the flaneur, transposing this urban process into the wild scenery of Fire Island.
The sculptures rest over plinths, display elements created by the artist in order to signify the artistic nature of these objets trouvés. Painted white, yellow, blue, green and red, the slender sticks that serve as the base for the sculptures refer to the five elements in nature: Space, Wind, Fire, Water and Earth.
The pictures, moving and still, are another kind of ready-made as Fitzpatrick finds sculptures made by the elements. Wind and water toss about materials framed by Fitzpatrick’s eye. Themes of sex, lightness and celebration are woven through the images.
