On Saturday July 4, coinciding with such a notorious date and as the conclusion of her time on Fire Island, Anna Betbeze will share her work Atmospheres, the new video work the artist has realized during her two weeks at the BOFFO Residency Fire Island. Atmospheres sets out to reorganize and recompose natural phenomena into abstraction. Light, shadow, water, and fire are elaborately folded into a series of performative gestures that conjure the ethos of making. In Atmospheres, a bathrobe is burned with hot coal, flaming vases are thrown to the sea, fugitive sunlight is directed across mirrored surfaces, and the landscape is filtered through prismatic colored light gels. It is a meditation on the intertwinement of ritual, pleasure, process, and place, resulting in a multi-sensory, perfomative experience of color, form, and surface. Come by the BOFFO House (533 Sail Walk) from 6:00 PM onwards to watch Atmospheres and sit around the fire with Betbeze, guests and some of the hybrid objects that star in her new video. As part of the presentation of the work, Betbeze and BOFFO will host a celebratory gathering on the beach at the BOFFO House to inaugurate this new video piece and share the social space of a bonfire at 9:00 PM. Dinner, light refreshments and s’mores will be provided.
