On Sunday, June 5, as the conclusion to their time at the BOFFO Residency Fire Island, Sean-Kierre Lyons will present AN ORIFICE TO LIBERATION, an interactive installation exploring the iconography of gay liberation and its complicated relationship with other signifiers of social allegiance. Originally conceived in 2015, Lyons asks participants to share a confession to the ear listening on the other side of the orifice. The exterior will feature reconstructions of evocative flags representing the intersections between the discursive social movements of today, ultimately bringing in to question the relationship between contemporary iconographies of gay pride and other, more terse representations of white power and systemic state violence. Lyons’ curious confession booth beckons viewers to see what lies behind the curtain, through both physical and metaphysical valences.
